When the problem reaches the double backer, quality is already at risk

Many board quality problems become visible at the double backer.

Warp appears more clearly. Bonding weakness becomes harder to ignore. The board may still run, but stability is gone, and the team starts asking the usual question: is the problem here, or did it start earlier?

That is exactly why the double backer is such an important warning zone.

By the time warp or weak bond is clearly visible there, the cost is already growing. The board may continue forward, but converting may struggle later. Sheets may not feed consistently. Rework may increase. Quality decisions become harder. The plant starts paying downstream for a problem that was not identified early enough upstream.

In many cases, the issue is not caused by one section alone. It may involve paper condition, single facer behavior, glue application, heat, moisture balance, machine settings, and running speed. But the double backer is often where the consequences become impossible to ignore.

That is why teams need more than quick corrections. They need a stronger technical framework to understand what the board is telling them and where the real cause is likely to be.

INSCO’s Advanced Corrugator Program (ACP) helps operators, supervisors, maintenance, and technical staff improve that understanding across the corrugator. The goal is not only to react to visible defects, but to diagnose earlier, correct more accurately, and reduce the downstream cost of recurring warp and bonding problems.

The next ACP edition starts on July 7.
