Despite a recent motion against New Indy Containerboard, there is no easy fix for the mill and its emissions.

A group of about 15 local individuals filed a motion at the end of September asking a federal court to stop air emissions coming from the plant.

Located between Rock Hill and Van Wyck, the mill has been the subject of more than 20,000 complaints. Those filing the motion have claimed the plant’s emissions are making them sick.

S.C. Sen. Michael Johnson said he is on board with anything that can get the issue resolved, but he is also stressing that it has to be handled the right way.

“Anybody that can move this along and help get this fixed, I’m on board with that,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if you shutdown the plant does that fix the problem.”

The group isn’t asking that the mill be shut down completely, just that it ends its emissions. And while that sounds good, could that lead to other environmental issues?
