Maine’s paper industry is much smaller than it once was.
Dozens of mills once operated across the state. Today, only a handful of pulp and paper mills remain in operation.
That makes the story of ND Paper’s Rumford mill particularly interesting.
The 125-year-old mill has not survived by assuming its traditional markets will eventually recover.
Instead, its strategy has increasingly centered on investment, product-mix changes and the ability to move toward paper grades where demand still exists.
