Impact of IOPS on IT System Performance

IOPS (input/output operations per second) is a standard unit of measurement pertaining to the maximum number of reads and writes to non-contiguous storage locations. But IOPS have gotten a bad rap lately because they can be wildly exaggerated when measured under controlled conditions. This is absolutely true, and yes, IOPS used as a sales specification should not be believed unless the environment variables (read/write ratio, block size, and latency) are included.
