This investment is part of the British company’s growth strategy in eastern Europe and will increase capacity of corrugated packaging by over 20 per cent, writes DS Smith. The investment includes the installation of new packaging machinery, a 7-colour HD Flexo printing machine and precision die-cutting equipment.

The work at Ghimbav is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The investment will support the goal to meet Net Zero emissions by 2050. The upgrades at Ghimbav will reduce the site’s gas consumption by 12 per cent and cut its carbon emissions by 210 tpy through the introduction of a steam optimisation feature to the corrugated board machine.

Furthermore, the installation of a new LED Lighting system, part of the group-wide rollout, will contribute to the group’s goal to reduce carbon emissions by 46 per cent by 2030.
