Domtar to close Crofton pulp mill in Canada

Canadian pulp and paper manufacturer Domtar plans to close its Crofton pulp ill in British Columbia, Canada. According to the company, the measure will affect 350 employees. The Crofton mill produces northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp on two machines with a total capacity of 380,000 tpy.

“The Crofton mill has been challenged for some time now,” said Steve Henry, Domtar paper and packaging president. “Unfortunately, continued poor pricing for pulp and lack of access to affordable fibre in British Columbia necessitates the closure,” he added.

Domtar says it is currently exploring a variety of possibilities for the future of the site. The company is committed to its remaining mills in British Columbia and to working with the government and industry partners to improve access to affordable fibre.

A couple of years ago, Domtar also produced paper at the Crofton mill – at that time under the name of Paper Excellence. However, paper production was shut down indefinitely in February 2024, after having already been idle for several months. The site used to produce printing and packaging papers on two paper machines with a total capacity of 320,000 tpy.
