Cardboard sector aims at carbon neutrality

The European Federation of Corrugated Cardboard Manufacturers (FEFCO) has launched an initiative to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

It said consumer awareness and expectations around packaging were rising, driven by concerns about climate change.

FEFCO said its newly written roadmap described how climate neutrality would be achieved by meeting a series of milestones, and set out the investments and policy measures needed for this.

The industry believed it could reduce its carbon footprint emissions because some actions were directly within its control. Improvements in material efficiency and circularity would reduce its carbon footprint by 3.3 million tonnes – equivalent to 19% by 2050 compared with ‘business as usual’ – and energy efficiency and decarbonisation measures would save an additional 2.8 million tonnes.
