AICC News: Flexo Best Practices Improve Members’ Bottom Line

Alexandria, VA – June 5, 2019 – AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, brought together 27 packaging professionals to the PrintCon Center at Clemson University in Clemson, SC, May 22-23 for Best Practices for Flexographic Printing: Raising the Standard.

Taught by Kern Cox, a lecturer at Clemson University and Dr. Scott Ellis, Ed.D, Principal, Working Well LLC, this regular seminar covered issues AICC member companies face every day.

Printing is an art and a science. The focus of Cox and Ellis was two-fold, taking the “art process,” the process of putting artwork on corrugated, and helping participants make it into science, with repeatable outcomes; and expanding attendees’ horizons and showing them what else is possible in their field.

Over two days, participants received intensive training on producing clean solids and line work as well as halftones and spot colors. Using classroom learning and time on press attendees tackled many typical troubleshooting issues, including dot gain, die-cutting, and proper graphic design for corrugated.

While the classroom learning was essential and well received, much of the true interest of the attendees was realized when they had time on press. There was also a great deal of excitement for attendees when they were watching plates being made.

“It was great to talk and listen to people in the industry who are going through the same things we are. It really gives you great insight,” said Matthew Boyes from C&B Display Packaging. “Being able to tour the Sonoco building was fascinating.”

Participants then created Standard Operating Procedures to take back to their home plants to improve production processes. They also left with One Point Lessons, and checklists that will codify best practices and help participants create plans and generate tangible results for their companies.
